Case dismissed against Irish national who threatened to assassinate president

Criminal-JusticeGeorgetown:  The case against Irish born seventeen- year-old Cilian James Crossan who was charged in early April for threatening to shoot the President Donald Ramotar in his head was dismissed today.

Magistrate Allan Wilson at the Lethem Magistrates’ Court presided over the case.

Reports disclose that the Crossan was under the influence of alcoholic while at Tabatinga, North Rupununi and made the incriminating statement to assassinate the president during a public event.

According to court information the matter was dismissed on a Nolle prosequi basis after the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) recommended that the matter be discontinued. The DPP had written to the Magistrate in her capacity and made the declaration which led to the matter’s dismissal.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Vishnu Hunte said when the matter was first called at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court that while the President was at Lethem, it was Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, Nigel Dharamlall who heard the defendant’s public remarks and cautioned him to stop but he refused. This he said led to the Crossan’s arrest.  Hunte further mentioned that the accused admitted to making the threats while under caution by police ranks.
