Meeting of UNASUR Council of Delegates commences in Guyana

East Coast Demerara : The Meeting of the Council of Delegates of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) today commenced at the Guyana International Conference Center (GICC), Liliendaal to discuss a number of pertinent issues that would aid effective operations of this critical body.

High on the agenda is the structure and budget for the General Secretariat, which was a mandate given by the Heads at the IV Summit of the Heads of State and Government held on November 26, 2010.

Recently appointed Secretary General of UNASUR, Maria Emma Mejia Velez today said that her appointment takes effect on June 16, 2011, when she will commence performing her duties in Quito, Ecuador, the place designated for the construction of the Union’s permanent base.
The Secretary General also disclosed that a consensus was reached to commemorate Venezuela’s President, Hugo Chavez and Juan Manuel Santos, Columbia’s Head of State, who diligently advocated for re-incorporation of Honduras as a full member of the Organisation of American States (OAS).

This proposal will be presented to the General Assembly of the OAS next week.  She explained that the UNASUR Heads understand the political importance of this body not only to the region but the world at large and want to explore the possibility of interacting with organisations in the Caribbean and the hemisphere.
