Medical, hazardous waste cell to be created year end

Georgetown: A specially designed cell will be created at the Haags Bosch landfill site at Eccles, East Bank Demerara and this will be done at the last quarter of 2013.

Head of the Solid Waste Management Programme, Gordon Gilkes says works are still being done on a possible design for the medical and hazardous waste cell.

He said there was no allocation for the construction of the hazardous waste cell in the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) loan agreement. Nevertheless, there was allocation for the study of a design for such a facility. Thus officials of the IDB decided to allocate fund for the project.

Gilkes noted the hydroclave disposal system which was installed at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) is dealing with medical waste by sterilizing and shredding biomedical and other hazardous waste, mainly from hospitals. However, the waste is disposed of in the regular cells at Haags Bosch; thus the need for a special cell.
