Mayor wants city night shelter for homeless

Port of Spain: The Port of Spain Mayor is recommending the use of the old National Broadcasting Service building on Abercromby Street be turned into a night shelter for homeless persons.

Mayor Louis Lee Sing says the suggestion has been made to the Minister of People and Social Development Dr Glen Ramadharsingh for consideration. Mayor Lee Sing said the former NBS building will provide the necessary accommodations needed.

“We have a plan where we want to get an appropriate building, where we will set up a night shelter for homeless people. Not for drug addicts, not for the mentally unbalanced but for homeless people for which we are hoping for the support of Central government. We have earmarked a good location for it, on Abercromby Street in the old NBS building. I know it has lots of bathrooms, lots of rooms; it has a nice top patio there next to the Guardian where a breakfast room or lunchroom can be placed to accommodate people. If we are able to get that building, we can create a nice night shelter that does not impact on any residential community.”

Mayor Lee Sing said the proposed night shelter will remove almost 50 percent of the homeless from the streets of the city.
