Mary King fired

Port-of-Spain: Government Minister Mary King has been fired.

Her appointments as Minister of Planning Economic and Social Restructuring and Gender Affairs, as well as that of Government Senator have just been revoked by the President, on the advice of the Prime Minister. King's dismissal came after a media report published last Sunday alleged that she participated in the invitation and evaluation process of the award of a $100,000 contract to a company, Ixanos, in which her family has an interest.

Yesterday her Cabinet colleague and fellow member of  the Congress of the People called for King's resignation forthwith. But Bissessar who had asked the Attorney General to investigate the allegations moved first.

She told reporters today that she had received fresh allegations about King's conduct in addition to what the AG was already detailing in his report. That information was also passed on to the AG who reported back this morning.

The Prime Minister said a new Planning Minister will be appointed by tomorrow.

She said the contract awarded to Ixanos will also be reviewed and can possibly be revoked.
