Georgetown : The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development has donated one garbage truck and two compactors to the Georgetown City Council to ease the garbage situation in the city, especially around the municipal markets. The handing over ceremony took place at Muneshwer’s Wharf. The provision of the $34M equipment is a collaborative effort by the City Council and the Government, through the use of the 2012 subvention of $20M from the Government to the City Council, and the remainder from the council. Minister within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development Norman Whittaker, who presented the keys of the truck to Georgetown’s Mayor Hamilton Green, said solid waste management will be boosted the city.
“I sincerely hope that due care will be taken, not only in the use but the security… maintenance of these expensive pieces of equipment, and I trust that they’ll be used to such an extent, and in such a manner that they could make a significant difference around the market areas because one would be placed at Stabroek and another at Bourda Market,” Minister Whittaker stated.
He said in a matter of weeks there should be substantial improvements in the reduction of the incidence of dumping garbage around the markets.
