Local Gov’t Ministry awaiting revised completion date for Haags Bosch landfill

Minister WhittakerGeorgetown: Construction and operations at the Haags Bosch Sanitary Landfill, aback Eccles, East Bank Demerara continues, as the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development is awaiting a revised completion date from the contractor.

According to Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Norman Whittaker, during a press conference at the Ministry’s Kingston Office, construction at the site is not at the desired pace that the ministry or Cabinet would like to see, but works are ongoing.

Minister Whittaker also highlighted that a number of activities under this project are ongoing including waste collection from participating Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs),  and provision of bins  to NDCs with the expectation that they (the bins) will be distributed to public places within those NDCs.

Four hundred and fifty eight (458) bins of varying sizes ranging from 240 to 1,100 litres were disbursed in Region Four, while 20 were given to the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) and 81 to the Ministry of Health to be placed at hospitals, health centres and health posts. The Ministry of Education received 123 for Nursery, Primary and Secondary Schools while 36 were given to other ministries.

Minister Whittaker also disclosed that four  new garbage collection trucks were  procured and will be operating under the ministry, contributing in a significant way to the collection and disposal of garbage within the NDCs along the East Bank and East Coast corridors. The trucks will also service collection bins in public places.

Haags Bosch Sanitary Landfill is financed to the tune of US$7.7M through a loan agreement entered into between the Government of Guyana (GoG) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), which took effect from February 22, 2007.

Additionally, bids were received, evaluated and recommendations for an award were submitted for roll -on roll -off trucks and bins. The IDB has issued its no-objection and the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board was notified and it is hoped that Cabinet will give its no objection in this regard.

The final design for Le Repentir dumpsite is in progress and is expected to be completed by June 30. Bids were received with respect to treatment of hazardous waste and were evaluated and a recommendation for an award was. made, IDB's no objection is being awaited.
