“Let’s Chat” online room launched for Education Ministry

Ministry of EducationGeorgetown: The Ministry of Education wishes to encourage the public to take full advantage of the opportunity to engage the Minister of Education, Hon. Priya Manickchand and Senior Officers of the Ministry every Thursday evening from 19:30hours to 20:30 hours on “Let’s Chat”, our new online chat room.

Since April 10, 2014, the Ministry of Education has been engaging members of the public on issues of interest to them in a new and innovative way.  The Ministry has launched a chat room, which is accessible from our website, www.education.gov.gy. The online discourse is open to parents, guardians, students, teachers, and other interested persons.

We have had robust discussions on the following:

·        Professional Standards for Teachers

·        Cellphone usage in schools: who should be allowed to use and when?

·        Truancy

·        Corporal Punishment: its usefulness, its dangers

·        The Role of Parents in their Child's Education

In the event that members of the public were unable to air their views on any particular topic of interest to them, transcripts of previous discussions have been archived on our website and they are welcomed to send their views and or comments via email.

The launch of this chat room, ‘Let’s Chat’ is one of many new initiatives by the Ministry to improve the delivery of service to the public.  The Ministry appreciates the importance of establishing direct lines of communication between the Ministry and the public. We think that this partnership is pertinent and will help to find solutions to issues that affect the apt delivery of education.

In 2013, the Ministry of Education launched three hotline numbers: 223-7891, 623-0550, and 623-4010, which services to provide rapid response to concerns. Additionally, we continue to interact with the public via social media namely Facebook: www.facebook.com/MinistryofEducation-Guyana and Twitter: @EducationGuyana.  We also encourage members of the public to continue to email us at educationministrygy@gmail.com
