Labour Minister cracks down on illegal immigrants

Port-of-Spain: Labour Minister Errol McLeod has confirmed that an investigation has started into reports of illegal foreign labor in Trinidad and Tobago.

Minister McLeod says he queried the issue after reading about three nationals of india who were brought to work in this country by businessman and then abandoned.

The minister admits there has been a rapid increase in the number of foreign workers in this country and he  is awaiting a report into the granting of work permits before decisive action is taken.

The Minister says he also has information that not all of the Chinese workers brought into this country by the Shanghai Construction Group for several mega projects, left the country. He says many of them have since opened businesses.
