Investigations widens in Swiss Stores robbery

Kingston.

The brazen daylight robbery at Swiss Stores in downtown Kingston earlier this month has led to an intensive investigation by the police into a case of money laundering and credit-card fraud involving one of the suspects.

According to a source, the expansion in the investigation has resulted in a political activist being questioned by the police.

The source said  this new turn in the investigation has delayed charges and court appearances for suspects in the case.

Lawmen are investigating the lifestyle of the political activist and want him to explain how he came to be in possession of his assets.

A businessman who was taken into custody in connection with the robbery was further questioned yesterday in the presence of his lawyer, in relation to the money-laundering aspect of the case.

The two have been in custody since last week following an operation by the Flying Squad which spanned four parishes.

The activist and the businessman were among five persons who were taken into custody in relation to the robbery.

Lawmen told journalists they have recovered 16 of the 26 watches, 13 of which were Rolex. During the raid of several premises, the police recovered $500,000 and approximately US$150,000 (J$15 million) and other items.
