Hundreds march in May Day celebrations

Claxton Bay: Hundreds turned out today for Mayday observances in South Trinidad which saw workers and unions walking up to the Trinidad Cement Limit strike camp in Claxton Bay but as the union leaders called for equity for workers and an end to all outstanding negotiations, there was also a call for an end to the war of words between the Labour Minister Errol McLeod and NUGFW President James Lambert.

With a large turn out of workers and unions from all across the country, hundreds made the hour-long trek to the TCL compound but it was not smooth sailing all the way as the police questioned the unions over whether or not permission was granted to march and hold a a mass meeting.

The meeting continued, with President of the National Trade Union Centre, Michael Annisette calling on the Minister of Labour to apologise to Lambert whom he called a fool.

Newly appointed, FITUN president Joseph Remy called for peace and partnership and the man who represents the union at the center of the latest controversy, OWTU President General,

Ancil Roget says the union has to fight just like all others and has never received any favours. He too wants peace.
