House, vehicles set ablaze after owner accused of ballot box tampering

FireGeorgetown: The Joint Service was called in Monday evening after multiple vehicles and buildings were set ablaze after residents of “C Field Sophia”, Greater Georgetown accused an individual of tampering and removing a ballot box from a polling station.

The individual whose house and vehicle was set ablaze was identified as Executive member of the Sophia Community Policing Organisation Narine Khublall whom also is a pastor. Neighboring houses were also caught in the blaze.  

Although, Guyana’s electoral preparations appear to be on track in most of the country. Election observers have called for peace.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Dr Steve Surujbally is insisting that Guyana’s post elections period for the 2015 General and Regional Elections be one that is free from violence. Dr Surujbally’s statement comes after numerous reports of unrest have circulated on social media and in local online media in areas such as South Sophia, and other parts of Georgetown.

He noted that “peace and tranquility must prevail” and persons should remain calm.
