Home Affairs Minister speaks out on Opposition’s violation of his rights

Georgetown : Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee in a release said that despite all the accusations and actions that were taken against him by the Opposition, they failed to produce any shred of evidence to establish his personal involvement in the shooting  or any other incident at Linden.

“All they have done is to pass political judgement to determine my suitability to be Minister of Home Affairs,” he said.

The Minister has been on the receiving end of the Opposition’s actions in the Parliament. They passed a ‘No Confidence’ Motion against him and subsequently followed up with a ‘gag’ Motion, which was sent to the Privileges Committee.

The Minister stated that to date, he has not been informed what parliamentary privilege he violated and said, “I consider this a grave injustice towards me, the people and the Party I represent.”

He further said that at the Committee of Privileges, the Opposition has a majority and as such, the outcome is therefore predictable and is tantamount to a witch-hunt by the dictatorship of one.

The Minister has endured violation of his rights in more than five sittings of the National Assembly and at every step, notwithstanding the presentation of credible case law and arguments based on pure law, efforts were and are still being made to frustrate and politicise the high court ruling in support of his freedom of expression.

“Whether by majority or minority my Constitutional Right to speak in the House or outside the House is sacred and fundamental and cannot be taken away from me by one or a million votes,” he said.

He said that the Opposition, especially its Leader, David Granger, is perpetrating a constitutional travesty, which is being masqueraded as an act of justice, when it fact, it is sheer political vindictiveness, malice and spitefulness.
