The life of the present board was extended to June. Subsequently, the matter was discussed at the level of the Cabinet and it was agreed that a new board will be established with several new members.

With regards to production, Minister Ramsammy said that as of a few days ago, production stood at an encouraging 22,500 tonnes. This is the result of about three weeks of good weather.

“This is very encouraging and I am looking forward for the continuation of the present good weather…if we can have eight to ten weeks more of good weather, then I see GuySuCo producing a very good first crop,” he posited.

The Minister maintains that in spite of its many challenges, the industry remains viable and will meet its 2014 target of 216,000 tonnes. He is also optimistic that the established target of 400,000 tonnes by the year 2020 will be reached.
