Georgetown : Materials relevant to Guyana’s bird watching potential will be launched at the British Bird Watchers’ Fair, in Rutland, London during a three- day event starting on August 17. Guyana has over 860 species of birds.
A contingent of representatives from the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG), Rupununi Trails, Dagron Tours, Surama, Iwokrama and Wilderness Explorers will be representing Guyana at the event which is esteemed as the largest bird fair in the world.
GTA’s Director, Indranauth Haralsingh highlighted that the publication being launched, entitled Birds of Essequibo, will help to accentuate the Essequibo Region’s position as a bird watching destination while at the same time realising other tourism aspects in the Region. It is anticipated that Essequibo will join the Rupununi in its stance as being one of the most popular local bird watching destinations.
Singh said Guyana has evolved into a bird watcher’s paradise which has already gained much attention and kudos for the quality of birds in Guyana therefore participation in this year’s bird fair will definitely increase such attention. Some of Guyana’s most distinct birds include the harpy eagle, cock of the rock, wedge tailed grass finch, Canje Pheasant, parrot and toucan.
