GRA, Ministry of Trade join forces to fight chicken smuggling

ChickenGeorgetown: For years the Law Enforcement and Investigation Division (LEID) of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) has been employing various methods to combat the scourge of smuggling. However, statistics compiled has shown that while some products are recording a decrease, others are on the rise. One smuggled product which remains constant is chicken.

For the year 2013, the agency recovered in excess of twenty one million dollars ($21,000,000) in revenue from chicken smuggled into the country. This has prompted the GRA to join forces with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Commerce (MINTIC), the agency tasked with the responsibility of issuing licences for persons desirous of importing chicken and chicken products into Guyana, with the aim of further stymieing those who are bent on defrauding the state of revenue.

Together the GRA and MINTIC will be conducting joint operations targeting those businesses and importers who have not utilized the relevant channels and those who are suspected of fraudulent actions. Persons found to be engaging in this practice will be punished to the full extent of the law, since this is the only way others contemplating such actions will be deterred.
