Georgetown: The Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) is participating in Mashramani 2013 Float Parade as part of its 90th Anniversary Celebrations. The Union’s Float would depict an umbrella which symbolizes coverage, protection, security, shelter and sanctuary.
The Union has organized a contingent of approximately two hundred (200) persons across the country which represents all the sectors of the Public Service of which agencies such as Health, Mining, Electricity and Revenue will be prominently featured, among others.
The umbrella Float symbolizes coverage, protection, security, shelter and sanctuary. This will be highlighted in a significant way in all the pieces.
The King of the Band Float conceptualizes the whole meaning of the umbrella. The upper level will be functional, can open and close at intervals, presenting the “WOW” factor. The umbrella can open and stretch about 25 feet in circumference. They are placed on a Globe where the bearer of the costume is housed. The arrow around the globe depicts progression or continuity. The cones that project from the center depict growth; as there will be bamboo stalks sticking out of them which depict life.
The float is built on wheels and is constructed as light as possible allowing free and easy movement. Enough space will be provided for the umbrella to open and close without the cones and globe being damaged or even interrupted. LED lights are also placed on the dish to give a glow on all the symbolic objects placed there.
This section of revelers depicts every sector of the public service presenting a futuristic element. The olive branch that arches downward behind the reveler symbolizes peace, education, health and protection. In their hand they can either carry a bamboo stalk or an umbrella.
The leader of this section will be decked as a huge stethoscope. In this section the revelers will be dressed in all white depicting nurses, doctors and other medical personnel. This will be a simple dress with neck piece, wings that depict flight of success and white stockings for the women. They will also carry an umbrella in hand.
The Leader of the mining section will be dressed in a gold body suit. Other precious stones will be highlighted on this costume, depicting strongly what their business is. They will be in all gold. Streaks of gold will be added to their gold body suits giving the illusion of liquid gold showering on them. They will also fetch an umbrella.
The leader of the GRA band will be dressed in all white with the blue and red stripes depicting their uniform. The dollar sign and other tax related objects will adorn this costume. This section will be a striped Blue and white costume depicting their uniform, their head dress will depict the Dollar Sign as it represents what they do.
