GPHC boosted with two ambulances from Canadian municipalities

Georgetown : The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) received two ambulances through the committed work from the Guyana Burns and Healthcare Charitable Foundation Inc, (GBHCF) and the York and Richmond Hill Municipalities of Canada. The much needed vehicles were handed over by the Canadian High Commission in Guyana.

Prime Minister Samuel Hinds who received the vehicles on behalf of the Government of Guyana said the combination of work among the various teams that ensured that the ambulances were acquired, equipped and transported to Guyana is heartwarming and exemplifies that the world is one. He noted that Guyana has been fortunate in that its people who make their homes in other lands have been well received, and they keep their native land in mind, looking for ways to extend assistance to those they left behind. For this he thanked the founders of the GBHCF, Harry and Pamela Harakh.

PM Hinds gave the commitment that the ambulance operators would do a good job in caring for the vehicles and equipment and greatly assist in the reduction of trauma in Guyana. He also observed that while studies have shown that the accident rate is high in Guyana, some measures of reduction could be achieved through due care, courtesy and consideration.

CEO of the GBHCF Harry Harakh had suggested that whilst the free health care provided at the GPHC may not be fully appreciated, a community based approached could be taken, where members identify what is needed for the system, and provide a certain percentage towards that with the Government providing the remainder along with operational costs. He also, observed that without sponsors a lot of things could not be done.

The GBHCF is a foundation which made its commitment to Guyana more than a decade ago when the Harakhs, along with a few associates decided to established the foundation now widely known as the Guyana Burns Care Unit. The group from Toronto comprises Harry and Pamela Harakh, Jennifer D’Andrade, Geeta Singh, Noel Denny, Desmond and Joan De Barros and Sherman Del Sol.
