GPHC appeals for women to get screened for cervical cancer

Georgetown: The Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) is appealing to women to get screened for cervical cancer. The Ministry of Health in collaboration with the hospital in observance of cervical cancer awareness month.

GPHC says 119 women were screened.  The tests were conducted with the use of the visual inspection with acetic acid (via), hence the immediate results and subsequent follow up. Free screening is done at the hospital and the Dorothy Bailey, Kitty and Campbellville Health Centres. This service is also offered at some private institutions for a minimal fee. GPHC notes that screening will continue during this month, at Food For the Poor, and the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry.

Cervical cancer is the term for a malignant neoplasm arising from cells originating in the cervix uteri. One of the most common symptoms of cervical cancer is abnormal vaginal bleeding, but in some cases there may be no obvious symptoms until the cancer has progressed to an advanced stage.
