Georgetown : It is not the Coalition Government’s objective or intention to conduct any witch hunt. Once persons are functioning in their positions, they will be retained by the Government. This was the gist of Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman’s response as he responded to questions on the continued employment of Head of the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA), Mahender Sharma.

Sharma was a candidate for the former government at the 2015 general elections.

Minister Trotman stated, “Not because your name is Mahender Sharma, we will remove you from office,” adding that once someone is functioning as they should, they will be kept in the Government’s employ.

The Minister explained that once a new administration takes office, it would be “fool hardy to sweep everyone away because in a sense you would be sweeping the legs out from under your own Government”. He opined that he was unaware whether the presence of “Sharma or anyone simply because of their name, or whatever” should be disqualified from holding a job.

The Minister reminded that the GEA falls under the purview of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, and a full brief on this issue will be given by that sector’s minister.
