Full, proper investigation to be conducted in police brutality

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAGeorgetown: The Ministry of Home Affairs says it notes with deep concern a report where it is alleged that a young man was sexually assaulted by a member or members of the Guyana Police Force while in custody at Timehri Police Station.

According to the Ministry, it is awaiting the submission of a report on this matter from the Guyana Police Force.

“The allegation has raised once again public interest as regards treatment of prisoners by Junior Police Ranks who allegedly flaunt the Force’s Standing Orders, thus bringing the Guyana Police Force into disrepute.”

The Ministry of Home Affairs strongly condemns any such breaches by any member of the Guyana Police Force.

“Such breaches fly in the face of the efforts at Police Reform and makes a mockery of the hard work by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Strategic Management Department of the Guyana Police Force  to successfully implement a strategic plan aimed at modernizing and reforming the Guyana Police Force.

The Ministry of Home Affairs expects that condign action will be taken by the Commissioner of Police against the Rank(s) found culpable after a speedy, full and proper investigation is conducted into the allegation and legal advice sought from the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions.”

Colwyn Harding claims that on Friday, November 15, 2013, he was violently assaulted by several police officers at a home in Timehri North where he was staying at the time, and later at the Timehri Police Station.

He alleges that he was beaten by a Constable and other officers into a state of unconsciousness twice, and was sodomised by a condom-covered baton resulting in serious injury to his intestines.
