Georgetown : Former Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Harripersaud Nokta will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award, during this year’s Pakaraima Mountain Safari for his role in conceptualising the event and in developing the hinterland.

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce (acting) Irfaan Ali told the media today that the award will be bestowed on  Nokta at a point on the trail dubbed ‘Nokta’s Point’ for the special memory it holds for the Former Local Government Minister.

The Pakaraima Mountain Safari first held in March 2003 was the brain-child of the then Minister Nokta. The first safari saw four Land Rovers and two tractors and trailers journeying from Karasabai in Region Nine to Orinduik Falls in Region Eight.

This year will be 11th consecutive year that the safari is being held and on March 23, 40 vehicles are expected to depart the GUYOIL Gas station at Diamond, East Bank Demerara, and spend 10 days journeying to Lethem, Region Nine and back to Georgetown.

The safari’s participants will pass through 14 Amerindian villages including Karasabai and Tiperu in Region Nine and Monkey Mountain, Kato and Orinduik, Region Eight.

Nokta has shared his experiences of the safari via his 2010 published book, “Genesis of the Pakaraima Mountain safari, the road to a Patamona dream.”
