Fire Service training centre to be completed by February

Georgetown: The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) is scheduled to complete its strategic plan by the end of this month, and its training centre located at Leonora, West Coast Demerara by next month, according to Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee.

Last year, a total of 60 ranks from the GFS benefited from training from a team of experts from the United Kingdom.

The aim of the training was to create a batch of core trainer of trainers to facilitate the transition of the GFS, in keeping with its new mandate as a Fire and Rescue Service; focusing mainly on specialised rescue and municipal fire fighting.

In this regard, the Guyana Fire Service (Change of Name) Bill, which, like the Police Force change of name Bill, was rejected by the parliamentary Opposition in June 2013, will be re-tabled in the National Assembly.

During the course of 2013, Chief Fire Officer, Marlon Gentle visited the UK where he completed a stint with the Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service as part of an initiative to foster partnerships with internationally acclaimed fire and rescue agencies.
