Georgetown : In keeping with the strategic plan of the Guyana Prison Service (GPS), the Ministry of Home Affairs is working aggressively to overhaul the institution; moving it away from one that focuses solely on incarceration to one with a correctional purpose.

According to Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee, this would be done particularly to the Lusignan Prison; transforming it into a modern facility. The strategic plan has already been completed and sanctioned by the Cabinet.

At present, the Ministry is looking to fill vacancies for the soon to be established strategic management department. These include: a person to head the department, a policy analyst, and two technical officers; one to deal with prison management and other for planning and research and resource mobilisation.

With regards to the name change from GPS to Guyana Prison and Correctional Service, Minister Rohee informed that he has already approached the Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall requesting that he tables a Bill that will effect the said name change.
