Existence of Rodney CoI to be extended

Walter RodeyGeorgetown: The life of the Walter Rodney Commission of Inquiry (CoI), which is expected to come to an end on June 25, will be extended.

The inquiry was given four months since the swearing-in of the three Commissioners on February 25, to complete its work. However, lead Counsel for the Commission Glen Hanoman confirmed that the time has indeed expired. However, he could not say with any certainty when the Head of State would give the extension, although he posited that it may be when the Commissioners return to Guyana for the commencement of Monday’s hearing. The President, he noted may meet with the Commissioners privately, after which an official announcement will be made.

Some $112 million was passed by the National Assembly earlier this year to fund the work of the CoI.

There are close to seven legal representatives at the Commission. These include, lawyers for the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), the Rodney Family, Donald Rodney, the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) and the Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC)

The Walter Rodney CoI, after years of clamouring, was finally set up by President Donald Remotar on February 25 earlier this year to examine what may have led to explosion that caused the death of the former WPA leader.

At the swearing-in, President Ramotar had mentioned that Rodney’s widow Patricia had approached him, seeking his assistance in setting up the inquiry.

He had hoped too that the findings from the inquiry would finally give all Guyanese, especially family members, the much needed closure.
