Education tool for workers in the tourism sector

Bridgetown.

The Tourism Awareness and Educational Tool which was recently launched by the Barbados Hotel & Tourism Association (BHTA) is aimed at educating workers and the general public of the importance of tourism.

According to the president of the BHTA Patrica Affonso -Dass, the interactive computer programme was a direct response to a study conducted in 2009  by the Assocation titled "The Competitive Tourism Environment Which Barbados Faces Its Challenges And Solutions", which concluded  the Barbados tourism product is not operating at optimal efficiency.

A major revelation of the findings was the lack of understanding about the importance of tourism, one solution was that the public should be kept informed to achieve buy-in from the populace", Affonso-Dass told Trakker News.

"Therefore the creation of a tourism awareness orientation programme for all workers in the tourism sector as well those in businesses and organizations that interface in any way with visitors was viewed as a necessary response to combat the human factor issues which are negatively impacting service in the industry", Affonso-Dass said.

She stated that developing the tool was only the begining.

"There will be a need to survey the level.of the use of the tool to review how effective its rollout has been, to review the tool after a three year period to ensure its relevance and to look at other social media to spread the word further", she added.
