Doctors contemplating removing girl’s eye

Diego Martin: The teeanged girl stabbed in the eye by a 53-year-old woman on Thursday remains in stable condition and doctors at the hosptal are contemplating of to remove the eye in which she was stabbed.

On Thursday the 53-year-old mother of another teenaged girl who was involved in a fracas with the youngster, outside the Diego Martin North Secondary School, used a pencil and stabbed the teen idenitified as Merlaine Sharpe in her left eye.

The attack was so vicious that the pencil broke in Merlaine's eye and remained lodged there only being removed during emergency surgery at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital.

Today the 53-year-old woman, who lives at Bridge Road, Blue Basin Diego Martin, remained in custody at the West End Police Station.

Officers say the woman so far faces a charge of at least wounding with intent, occassioning greivous bodily harm.

Investigators today also returned to the scene outside the Diego Martin North Secondary School, where the incident occured and took statements from eyewitnesses and those involved in the fracas.
