Port-of-Spain: President George Maxwell Richards has chosen criminologist and former independent senator Professor Ramesh Deosaran as the next member of the Police Service Commission to replace Nizam Mohammed whom he dismissed on Monday for racial remarks regarding the ethnic composition of the heirachy of the police service.
The announcement was made by the Leader of the House of Representatives Dr Roodal Moonilal in the House of Representatives this afternoon.
The Parliament approved the selection late this afternoon with the support of all members of the House.
It is widely believed that Professor Deosaran will also be selected as the chairman.
Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley says the country is fortunate that Professor Deosaran has agreed to fill this position.
