Crown Counsel wins historic case

Bridgetown.

Acting Crown Counsel Elwood Watts has successfully challenged the appointment of an attorney at law  to the post of Crown Counsel ahead of him, without the post being advertised.

The matter was heard in chambers before Justice William Chandler yesterday, Principal Crown Counsel Sharon Deane, who represented the Judicial and Legal Services Commission informed the court that the Chief Personnel Officer had agreed to appoint Watts to the post.

Watts had filed an injunction in August asking the court to block the appointment of Alison Burke to the position of Crown Counsel on September 1.

Burke who was a staff nurse at the Ministry of Health prior to her appointment, had no experience in court proceedings. Burke's appointment would have Watts her junior.

Watts' main contention was that he was not given the opportunity to apply for the post for which he was qualified, because it was never advertised.
