City businessman killed at home in blaze

Georgetown: A 77-year-old businessman was burnt alive early Monday morning after the building which housed his living quarters and two businesses on Main and Lamaha Street, Georgetown mysteriously caught alight next to the official residence of Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo.

Dead is Yusuf Sankar. The fire reportedly started around 5-6 am.

Fire fighters also soaked the Prime Minister’s Official Residence due to the intense heat from the fire that quickly engulfed the wooden building that housed Risan’s Photography and Jarrod’s photocopy centre.

Sankar’s brother-in-law, Hemraj Kissoon said that the man’s children had left for the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, leaving him and a female occupant at home.

Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, who lives next door, said his bodyguards ran over to lend assistance after they saw smoke and heard screams emanating from the building. The managed to save the female occupant, but were unable to get to the elderly man, due to the heavy grill work on the building. The Guyana Fire Service was able to contain the fire from spreading to other buildings.
