Georgetown : Over 100 Guyanese will benefit from eye examinations and surgeries being conducted by the Chinese medical team at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) by the end of this week.
Head Nurse of the Eye Clinic at GPHC, Kunte Bacchus told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that 40 patients were looked at yesterday, 20 for Today and another 30-40 for Friday.
Most of the surgeries being conducted are for the removal of cataract, which takes a minimum of 10-15 minutes to be completed. However, two retina surgeries are slated for today. These entail a more complicated procedure than the cataract surgeries.
Pre-operative procedures and secondary screenings for surgery patients began since last week by the Chinese team.
Bacchus explained that, “we try to allay their fears so that they do not get too anxious; we start dilating the eyes, check their blood pressure, and check their body weight to make sure that they are in order and ready for surgery.”
Additionally, the families of the patients were educated on how to administer the best post-surgery home care for patients after they are discharged.
