Cancer Society threatens legal action against cigarette company

Port-of-Spain: The Cancer Society is seeking legal advice on its concerns about an ad campaign being run by the West Indian Tobacco Company (WITCO).

Chairman of the Cancer Society George Laquis says the society is acting on the advice of Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan.

Minister Khan has said that if the Cancer Society feels WITCO is breaking the law they should take it to the police.

Dr Laquis says the society's attorneys are now looking at the matter.

Dr Laquis has described  a campaign in which WITCO is using specially designed packages to promote its sponsorship of various events including a children's party as ilegal and deliberate.

He is also concerned that the Carnival imagery currently being used on the company's cigarette packs are illegal under the Tobacco Control Act.

WITCO for its part says it ensures that its marketing practices do not undermine efforts to combat under age smoking.

It says it fully supports the laws and regulations prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to anyone under the legal minimum age in this country.
