Business Association says cement strike crippling economy

San Juan: The San Juan Business Association is calling on government to intervene in the current impasse at Trinidad Cement Limited.

The association says as it stands now over 200,000 risk being placed on the breadline.

It  is also warning that the the economic situation in the country is now under threat.

The association believes the failure of government to resolve this matter will plunge this country into a serious economic crisis.

It believes the situation has become a bread and butter issue, as persons from the lower strata of employment are affected.

The association's president Abraham Ali outlined a number of sectors in the construction industry that have been adversely affected as a result of the five-week-old strike.

It says block manufacturer, sand and gravel quarry owners, transporters, painters, plumbers, electricians, steel fabricators, hardware stores and others are already feeling the pinch.

Ali is of the view that government’s agenda will be seriously affected if the crisis is prolonged, as their interest in developing the country, both from an economic and social standpoint will be in jeopardy.

He believes the current industrial climate will negatively affect government's foreign investment drive.
