APNU stands with the people of Linden-Granger

Georgetown :  Brigadier David Granger, leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly has affirmed that A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) do not support the proposed increase in the electrical tariff in Linden. Granger said that both the Partnership and the Party will stand firm with the people of Linden and the wider Upper Demerara-Berbice communities against any increase in the tariff.

APNU leader said that Linden’s interest and its future will be guaranteed by APNU. “We will not allow the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) administration to punish persons they think are constituents of APNU.

Brigadier Granger said that APNU will not agree to an increase in electrical tariff, emphasizing that the government must first commit to addressing the economic, education, employment, health and communications needs of the people of the Region.

Residents of the community expressed alarm and indignation at the proposed rate hike. They said that it is not that they do not want to pay but that they just cannot afford to pay. With unemployment in the Region over 50% and the lack of economic growth and job opportunities, poverty plagues the area that was once a thriving mining community.
