Airport workers threaten weekend shutdown

Piarco: President of the Public Services Association (PSA) Watson Duke has said that workers of both the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the Airports Authority (AA) may not be giving their all this weekend which may translate into flight delays. Duke says the workers are upset because outstanding salary negotiations are yet to be settled.

It's been several weeks now that workers of both the CAA and AA have been protesting the slow pace of salary negotiations and it now seems as though things will be heating up this weekend. Duke concedes that they are essential service workers but he says  the workers feel they have reached breaking point.

Duke says the 500 workers feel that the Finance Minister Winston Dookeran has betrayed them.

Duke is also calling on the  government to adjust the salaries of dental nurses whom he claims  are being under paid.

Earlier this year duke signed for a five percent salary increase for public officers. His decision has led not only to dissension within the ranks of the PSA but has caused Duke's colleagues in the trade union movement to distance themselves from him.

Duke says as a result of their disrepect he will not participate in Labour Day observances on Sunday.
