Accidents due to distractions

Bridgetown.

President of the Barbados Road Safety Association Sharmane Roland-Bowen says eighty-five percent of road accidents are caused by distracted or inatentive drivers, ten percent are due to vehicular failure and ten percent occur due to the conditions on the road.

Roland -Bowen told Trakker News too many drivers are distracted by their cell phones or by  their passengers whilst behind the wheel. She noted that some people drive to close behind other vehicles and they also speed and take a number of risks, such as overtaking other vehicles when it is not safe to do so.

She said drivers should engage in defensive driving by anticipating the actions of the other mortorists, staying focused when they get behind the wheel and reducing their speed when travelling.
