$76M spent on hinterland school uniform programme

Georgetown: A total of $76M was expended to support the National School Uniform Programme in the Hinterland in 2012, benefiting 30,000 students in Region 1, 7, 8 and 9, according to Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai.

The programme benefitted 165,000 students throughout the coastal regions who were presented vouchers valued $1500 for the procurement of school items by the Ministry of Education.

In the Hinterland, the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs is responsible for the programme. The Ministry procures school uniform material which is distributed to communities in the four regions each school year. Sewing groups within the communities are paid $800 to sew an outfit.  The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs pays the sewing cost in an effort to allow for income generation.

The School Uniform programme has positively influenced school attendance and performance in the Hinterland.

The National School Feeding Programme, another initiative to ensure all the nation’s children are provided for saw thousands of students benefitting in the hinterland.

A World Bank survey has found that the school feeding programme has positively impacted attendance and learning in students in the hinterland.
