19 AFC alleged protesters charged-granted bail

Essequibo : Naith Ram, Chairman of the Essequibo Paddy Farmers Association, Tage Sewcharan, Secretary of the Association, along with 17 other men, who were arrested by the police following protests on the Essequibo Coast on Friday July 04, 2014, appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Anna Regina Magistrate Court yesterday.

All the men were charged with riotous behaviour and in addition Naith Ram and Tage Shewcharan were charged with assault with intent to resist lawful apprehension, speaking at a public meeting where a noisy instrument was used without permission, and holding a meeting in a public place in respect of which no notice had been given to the appropriate officer of police.

Some of them were also charged with traffic offences.

They have all been placed on bail to return to court on August 05, 2014.

Additional charges are likely to be made.
