Youth Service will be voluntary

Bridgetown.

There will be no mandatory requirements under the proposed National Youth Service, Minister of Family, Youth, Culture and Sports Stephen Lashley made this clear as he led off the debate of on a resolution to approve the National Youth Policy in the House of Assembly yesterday.

Lashley said the policy was one of the most comprehensive and modern national youth policies to be found in the Commonwealth and came about in part. because of a rapidly development bashment culture which saw Barbadian youth imitating alien and socially underserable pratices.

Lashley said that Barbados needed to return to the traditions which had made it the envy of the Caribbean, therefore vital steps were required to empower Barbadian youths and such empowerment could never be realized by quick fix pie in the sky prescriptions.

"The only true path to true  youth  empowerment was via consultations, mobilization of the youth and consistent programmes.
