World Maritime Day exhibition commences

Georgetown: The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has designated Thursday September 25th, 2014 as World Maritime Day. This year World Maritime Day is being commemorated under the theme, “IMO Conventions: Effective Implementation”.

As part of its observances, the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) will be hosting a Marine exhibition today in the compound of the Transport & Harbours Department’s Head Office, Battery Road & Fort Street, Kingston, Georgetown. The exhibition will be open to the public between the hours of 10:00 and 16:00 hours.

It will showcase various activities in the maritime sector, including some shipboard tasks, navigational aids, etc and also illustrate local efforts to effectively implement the Conventions.

During the day, MARAD will be giving special awards to the Captains and the Bowmen of the small passenger vessels (speedboats) who would have performed commendably and recommended by their peers. Additionally, the owners of the best maintained boats would also be similarly recognized.

The general public is invited to join the officers of the Department and view the exhibits, and also to interact with other professionals involved in the maritime industry. A special invitation is extended to school children.
