Woman charged with attempted murder

ST JOHN’S, Antigua : Jasmine Ledette, 65, of Bendals has been remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison on a charge of attempted murder after appearing before Magistrate Veronica Thomas yesterday.

Ledette is alleged to have attempted to murder her 42-year-old daughter, Maudelyn Simon, who is still hospitalised at the Mount St John’s Medical Centre.

Allegations are that Simon was at her mother’s home cursing, drinking and smoking marijuana on the morning of June 8.

During the course of events, Simon started pounding on her mother’s door and ignored repeated requests for her to stop.

Ledette allegedly exited the house with a bottle of kerosene and she poured it on Simon before setting her ablaze.

Simon was rushed to the hospital with first and second degree burns. She remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nursing her injuries.

Magistrate Thomas is unable to grant bail for this indictable offence, so bail will have to be obtained in the High Court. Committal proceedings are set for September 19.
