Williams to act as Police Commissioner following Commissioner’s resignation

Port-of-Spain: Deputy Commissioner of Police Stephen Williams will act as Commissioner of Police for the next six months. Williams was unanimously chosen to act in the post by the Police Service Commission today, one day after the resignation of Commissioner of Police Dwayne Gibbs was made public.

The appointment comes four years after Williams' nomination as Police Commissioner was rejected by a PNM majority in the House of Representatives.

National Security Minister Jack Warner says the resignations of top cops Dwayne Gibbs and Jack Ewatski in no way impedes government's fight against crime, or the implementation of any new crime plan.

Minister Warner told reporters at the Piarco International Airport this evening that the crime fight does not revolve around two men.

Warner again assured that there was no political interference in the resignations of the two men. He could also not say whether the two men would have to be paid for the remaining of their contracts.

Warner told reporters that the controversial process of amending the system of appointing a top cop is being looked at.
