Wife pleads guilty to cocaine trafficking; husband remanded

cocaineGeorgetown: A 21-year-old mother of two, who was recently caught with over seven pounds of cocaine strapped to her body, pleaded guilty to trafficking Monday before Magistrate Zameena Ali- Seapaul at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s court.

Angelica Forde confessed to trafficking 3.040 kilograms of cocaine on June 15 at the Eugene F. Correia (formerly Ogle) International Airport. The housewife told the court “it’s my stuff; my husband and children were not involved,” as she tried to save the father of her children, James Forde.

However, James Forde was charged for inciting his wife to traffic the cocaine between June 1 and 15, at their Lot 100 B Mora Street, Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara. The 23-year-old taxi driver denied the allegation. The couple was represented by Attorney-at-law Mark Conway, who begged the Magistrate to impose a light sentence on the mother since she admitted to the crime and did not waste the court’s time. Mrs. Forde has to return to court on June 21 for sentencing while her husband was remanded to prison until July 25. Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor Konyo Sandiford-Thompson said that the woman showed no remorse since she attempted to traffic the drug while she was travelling with her two kids.

The prosecutor had opposed bail for James Ford, on the grounds that he was charged as a principal offender after he allegedly solicited his wife to traffic the cocaine.

According to the prosecutor, on June 15 at the Eugene F. Correia International Airport, Angelica Forde along with her two children where outgoing passengers destined to Barbados and then to the United States.

However, CANU officer stationed at the airport observed that her clothing was fitted in an unusual manner and became suspicious. A female CANU officer took Forde into a room, conducted a body search and the cocaine was found strapped to her body in packet underneath her clothing.
