Where will you be in 2012?

Georgetown: I’m making my resolutions list and checking it twice while some ladies are trying to judge their best dress for the millionth time and others are already tasting their cook-up to ensure that guests don’t criticize on New Year’s Eve.

It’s called Old Year’s Day here in Guyana and it’s often hectic with some deciding whether to attend church or the dance floor when 2012 hits.

When one young man was asked what he’ll be doing on New Year’s Eve he said that he has plans on getting drunk and hopefully kiss the one he love.  I hope a lickin (and I ain’t talkin bout KFC finger lickin chicken) don’t follow after that, because she is someone else’s wife.

Some plan to live it up in pomp and style at the best clubs and restaurants with fine wine and fireworks while others just live to blow up stuff with firecrackers at the stroke of midnight when they should be thanking God for the past year, and asking for His blessings to be faithful and obedient in the coming year. That reminds me I have to hunt down my old ear muffs from last year.

One woman said that she’ll make a nice dinner for herself and husband and maybe get some booze to drink at home. Now that’s a safe idea. It’s a lot better than going to the clubs and worrying about who is going to drive when both parties drunk. Besides you get to stay alive for one more day and not crash in a famous lantern post.

I know the police force will be playing ball on New Year’s Eve when hundreds of calls will ring in, probably for various reasons, instead of the party horn for 2012.

But here’s a thought to help the melancholy while the rest of the world party away: visit an old age home or an orphanage with some homemade food or a few gifts. Just by sitting and spending time with them would bring a smile and warm their hearts of being less privileged than you are.

Wherever you’ll be, remember to be thankful for life for another year, don’t take it for granted.

As for me I usually fall asleep and get woken by the fireworks but this year due to the tough economic times I’ll be babysitting for some dollars.

A blessed and happy 2012 to all!
