Rain end play early on the opening day of the first Test

Bridgetown.

At the close of play on  the first Test match between the West Indies and Australia at Kensington Oval, the home team was 179 for 3  with Darren Bravo 20 not out and veteran batsman Shivarine Chanderpaul 8 not out.

Darren Sammy won the toss and elected to bat, opener Adrian Barath was dissmissed for 22, with the score on 31, his opener partner  Kraigg Brathwaite  anchored the innings with a patience 57, after being  dropped on 10 and 44.

The 19 year old Brathwaite epitomised his fighting qualities during his 199 ball vigil at the crease.

Kirk Edwards, the newly appointed vice captain of the team despite his lack of experience in international made a composed 61.

He and Brathwaite  give nothing away to the Australian bowlers during thier second wicket partnership of 104 runsshared 104 runs.

"We started out saying we were not going to back down.Australia was going to come hard, the pitch was not that easy, as the ball got older it was a little harder to score. The Australian bowling good lines and we decided we were going to work hard and not give our wickets away", Brathwaite told reporters.   

Rain halted play at 4.05 PM after 73 hard fought overs, the Australian bowling was steady with  fast bowler  Peter Siddle  being the best bowler with 1 wicket for 36 runs from 17 overs.
