Water Authority, Union reach $183M settlement

St Joseph: The state-water company, the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) and the Public Services Association (PSA) today successfully concluded negotiations for a new Collective Agreement for the period January 1st, 2008 to December 31st, 2010 valued at $183 million, which includes settlement of arrears.

This agreement was arrived at after five meetings being held between the parties and covers all monthly paid staff within the PSA bargaining unit.

Chief Executive Officer, Ganga Singh, noted that under the agreement each worker will receive significant benefits.

PSA President Watson Duke, described the agreement as ‘very good’ adding that it would ensure income and job security.

Key elements of the Agreement are as follows:

·        Salary increases – 5% over a three (3) year period i.e. 2%-1%-2%

·        COLA of  $145.00 per month

·        Settlement of major outstanding grievances

·        Expanded work hours

·        Restructuring of the Authority; and

·        Allowances

The negotiations were conducted in a spirit of good faith, openness, co-operation and discussions were solution oriented.

Additionally, parties have endorsed the initiative of social dialogue to further entrench the partnership governance of the Authority.
