Walter Rodney COI begins today

Walter RodeyGeorgetown: The highly anticipated Walter Rodney Commission of Inquiry (CoI) is set to commence today with scores of persons expected to testify in the investigation which will seek to ascertain, who or what, may have led to the death of the late historian and political activist.

Dr Rodney was killed 33 years ago on June 30,th 1980, when a bomb, planted in a walkie-talkie device, exploded in his lap, while he sat outside the Georgetown Prisons in his brother’s car. According to reports, he was sent there, at the request of former Guyana Defence Force electronics expert Gregory Smith, to test the device “near the metal fence”.

On February 25, the three-member Commission was sworn in before President Donald Ramotar, to examine the circumstances which led to the death of Dr Walter Rodney. Some $112 million has been budgeted for the Commission.
