Barbadians students at the the three campuses of the University of the West Indies (UWI) must pay for their tuition fees from the start of the academic year 2014-2015.

This was revealed by Minister of Finance Christopher Sinckler during the 2013 Financial Statements and Budgetary Prposals in the House of Assembly yesterday evening.

According to Sinckler, the Government will continue to pay the economic cost of each student which is much higher.

Sinckler said that while the Government remained committed and fully supportive of the continued growth and development of the UWI, the island's contributions to the university had outstripped its funding of all of Barbados' nursery, primary and secondary schools as well as contributions to the Barbados Community College and the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic.

The Minister revealed that measures will be put in place to ensure that those without the financial wherewithal could still pursue a university degree.
