US Embassy donates US $112,000 worth of medical equipment

DSC_0017Georgetown : The Ministry of Health received a quantity of equipment including intravenous (IV) stands, surgical instrument stands, surgical instruments and other items intended to benefit operating theatres, emergency rooms and admission rooms. The items presented are worth over US $112,000.

The Ministry will also be looking at the delivery of the curriculum in the various areas. United States Ambassador, Brent Hardt presented the items on behalf of the Embassy’s Humanitarian Assistance Programme to Minister of Health, Dr, Bheri Ramsaran at the Materials Management Unit (MMU), Diamond, East Bank Demerara.

While expressing gratitude for the items donated, Minister Ramsaran indicated that the Health Ministry has such equipment; however there are instances when they need replacing.

Ambassador Hardt noted that the US has enjoyed a close relationship with the Health Ministry for many years,most significantly under the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief and through the US’s contributions to the Global Fund.

He added that the Embassy’s interactions with the Ministry and several civil society organiations have had a positive and lasting impact on Guyana’s health system. This is evident in the enhanced capacity of the country’s laboratory services.     The Ambassador emphasised that today’s donation which was made possible through the Department of Defence and Humanitarian Affairs Programme provides a further boost to the ability of the Health Ministry and other health partners to provide crucial life saving advances in public health.
