Upgrades to century old sewer system commence citywide

GWI Orin BrowneGeorgetown: At Light and Fifth Street Alberttown, Georgetown Wednesday GWI’s Project Manager, Orin Browne confirmed that works on the rehabilitation of the main sewage systems around central Georgetown commenced and the programme is expected to run for two years.

The Project, has been dubbed the Georgetown Sanitation Improvement Programme, and is valued at US$10M and will be funded by a loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Government of Guyana.

The contract was awarded to S. Jagmohan Hardware Supplies and Contracting Services in collaboration with Nabi Construction Inc. as the Contracting Firms.

“We will be working expeditiously to bring relief to the citizens of Georgetown. There are several streets around the city that would be affected over the course of the execution of the project; Light Street, Quamina Street, Sussex Street, Camp Street, Regent Street, New Market Street, Saffon Street…It is the entire ring mains of central Georgetown.” GWI Project Manger explained.

Brown said approximately 12 kilometers of pipe will be laid in addition to the rehabilitation of the entire sewer system. In addition, 24 pumps stations will be rehabilitated since the system currently in use is approximately 80 years old.
